Students in grades 3 - 5 created original internet memes which focussed on visual humor and literacy. Students worked with found images and adding text to a simple Google slide format. The richness of the project came from presenting their work. Each student learned how to share their screen, a concept that was new at that time, and presented their “meme” aloud. The result was uproarious laughter and rich dialog about why things are humorous to some people and less-so to others. While this project required what some would consider little artistic skill, it generated conversations about cultural understandings of humor, built a strong awareness of visual language, and built community during a difficult time.
